I want to revisit the comic, which was probably one of the seminal things of my youth. I went through a faze obsessed with the super distopian Akira and battle royal. Evangelion would have fit too, had I known. There is a Japanese capacity to work on a macro scale way bigger (mostly invented) that pretty much never happens in the west.

This movie is still pretty great, in spite of virtually no coherent writing. I remember the manga fleshing things out, but I’m still at the pint, watching it now, as I was whenever I first saw it, where it is immensely impressive, but narratively nonsensical.
